The working value I kept is machine=svga_s3 (some others work as well) Value was previously undefined (line was disabled by a leading #). I apparently solved it adding a "machine" parameter value in the DosBox config file (DosBox section). No issue using 2D setting.Ĭhanging DosBox CPU throttling had no effect. Using Interplay pure DOS 88/89 version and DosBox. Not with pawns, but pieces yes as a result castling is a real pain in 3D. I could reproduce the same 3D being stuck for long whiles during some pieces moves, the move starting normally, then holding for long before moving very very slowly. Have anybody else had similar issues with Battle Chess? Are there hardware configurations, drivers or tsr-programs that can help the issue? Or are there different releases that does not have these problems? General usage on a 486DX is naturally way snappier than a 286, but when I move a long range piece and the slowdowns hit it's the same thing on both. There also seems to be little correlation between the speed of the emulated computer and the duration of the slowdowns. I have also tried making sure I have an FPU since that seemed to help on Amiga, but it does not help on PC. I tried disabling sound from within Battle Chess, though, and it does not help. I saw one forum post that said the problem had to do with sound playback and disabling sound should fix it. I have not been able to solve it on PC, though. So a plain A1200 with a 68020 CPU will hang, but adding a 68882 FPU seems to help. I think I have solved the problem on Amiga by making sure the machine I emulate have an FPU. ![]() But I've seen multiple people complain about the same thing, so it's not just me.Ĭhanging to 2D setup does help, but that's no fun :-p These hangs can happen multiple times in one move, so moving a piece from one end of the board to the other can literally take minutes.Īt first I thought it was a problem with the Amiga version I have, but since it also happens under DOS it seems to be a real issue with Battle Chess, although I don't remember it being this bad back in the day. They start moving normally, but as soon as they enter the next square they just freeze up for long times before moving along. This is most noticable when moving rooks, queens and bishops. But I have noticed that both versions seem to suffer from some slowdown issues. Been playing around a bit with Battle Chess, mostly Amiga and DOS versions.
